Lilly's Story

Pencils with Passion is a non-profit organization 501 c 3  that connects schools, communities, and individuals to two schools named Collegio Christianos and Celeste Faro in Veron area of the Dominican Republic far eastern coast, to provide the learning materials and resources they desperately need for a proper education and the ability to thrive!  I am in Girl Scouts now almost 11 years, and I’ve gotten my Bronze and Silver Award, the final step in my scouting career is to get my Gold Award! For my Gold Award I wanted to choose something that meant a lot to me. I thought about things that were important in my life. Ever since I was a little girl my family has gone to the Dominican Republic, every year since 2010, from 2 weeks to 3 months at a time, it is like my second home really. The Dominican Republic is a country with a tremendous amount of poverty. The average household of 4 makes $ 150 to $200 per month, sometimes up to $500 per month with a good job at a tourist resort. For example most police officers make $200 per month.  I thought about the schools in the US and how privileged we are compared to underprivileged schools in other countries. I wanted to create a way to connect our plentiful resources to my adopted school in the D.R. that doesn’t have nearly as much. That’s where I got the idea for the project!

Changing Lives Through School Supplies: Pencils With Passion’s Journey

✏️ Pencils With Passion Returns to the Dominican Republic: 6,000 Pounds of Hope and Counting For the team at Pencils With Passion, every trip back to the Dominican Republic feels like coming home. What began as a simple idea—to ensure no child goes to school without the tools they need to learn—has grown into a powerful movement of generosity, consistency, and love that continues to give year after year. From Gold Award Project to Global Impact It all began as Lilly Thomson’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, created to address educational equity in the Dominican Republic. What started as one student’s vision to make learning accessible has now exploded into an ongoing mission that’s changing lives across communities. Now a student at Tulane University in New Orleans, Lilly still manages orders, contributes ideas, and helps guide the organization’s plans. Even from campus, she remains the heart behind the mission—and yes, she’s still in charge! 600 Pounds This Year. Nearly 6,000 Pounds Total. This year’s trip delivered an incredible 600 pounds of school supplies, bringing our total to nearly 6,000 pounds since our very first mission. Backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and crayons—each item may seem small on its own, but together they tell a powerful story of hope and transformation. For many families, these supplies mean one less financial burden and one more opportunity for their children to dream, learn, and thrive. Several of the students we met this year were also there during our first trip four years ago. Seeing their growth—both in confidence and education—reminds us exactly why this mission matters. A Team Fueled by Purpose This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our incredible team: Lilly Thomson, founder and heart of Pencils With Passion, who continues to guide the mission’s direction and growth. Nelson Miller, who once again led with passion and heart. Mario, our trusted attorney and translator, who bridged every language gap with compassion. And our steadfast crew — Susie, Tracey, Jeff, and Brooks — who poured their energy into every detail of the mission. With special thanks to Ken Rushing and Grindaholik Media Group, our web developer and creative partner for helping us share our story and mission with the world. Each person played a vital role in bringing hope to hundreds of children, proving that when compassion stays consistent, impact compounds. Capturing the Stories That Matter During this visit, our team recorded a series of video interviews with students, teachers, and community members. Some of these children have grown up with Pencils With Passion by their side, while others are just beginning their journey. Each shared story paints a vivid picture of how something as simple as a backpack can change a life. We’re proud to share these moments in our recap video below—showcasing the smiles, gratitude, and spirit of the communities we serve. More Than Supplies — It’s Legacy This year’s mission serves as a heartfelt reminder that generosity is a ripple that never stops moving. From Oklahoma to the Dominican Republic, your donations, prayers, and continued support are building bridges of opportunity that last for generations. Our work isn’t finished. There are still classrooms waiting, children hoping, and communities growing stronger because of your kindness. Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we’re proving that passion—when paired with purpose—can truly change the world, one pencil at a time. ✏️❤️ Watch Videos https://pencilswithpassion.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Pencils-2-2.mp4https://pencilswithpassion.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Pencils-With-Passion-2.mp4

Dominican Republic School Drive 2025: Join the Mission

🎒 July 2025 Mission to the Dominican Republic: School Supplies for over 500 Children This July, our team — Lilly, Tracey, Jeff, and Nelson — will return to the Dominican Republic with a powerful purpose. Our mission is to deliver school supplies to students at Colegio de Christianos and Celeste de Faro for the 2025–2026 school year. Thanks to a generous donation of 300 pounds of school supplies from a wholesale partner — and continued support from private donors — we’re able to do more than ever before. This year, we’ll fill over 500 backpacks with the essentials each student needs to start the school year with confidence. 📚✏️ For many of these children, basic learning tools are not easy to come by. However, your support is helping change that — one backpack at a time. ❤️ Want to Help? If you feel led to support, here’s how you can get involved: Donate new school supplies (in-kind gifts are welcome) Give financially to help us purchase backpacks and fill them with essentials👉 [Click here to donate now] In September, we’ll personally deliver these backpacks to the students. Afterward, we’ll share photos so you can see the joy your generosity brings. This marks our third year serving students in this region. Each year, the impact grows — not just in numbers, but in hope. Because of you, Pencils with Passion is building more than backpacks. We’re building futures. Together, we’re not just giving supplies — we’re giving hope.

Empowering Education in the Dominican Republic

Pencils with Passion Returns: Delivering Essential Supplies and Igniting Hope in Education for Children in Need On September 11, our dedicated team including Jeff, Tracey, and Brooks Thomson, Susie and York Ruell, along with generous donor Nelson Miller and board member Mario Vasquez, delivered 650 pounds of school supplies to Celeste Faro and Colegio Christianos schools. The joy on the children’s faces was heartwarming. They eagerly opened their new backpacks filled with essential supplies like notebooks, pencils, and crayons, just as school was starting. As we spent time with the students, we couldn’t help but feel the weight of their dreams and aspirations. These children are filled with hope for a brighter future, and it was a privilege to play a part in that. We also engaged in discussions about improving our delivery process and refining school supply lists for future efforts. Mario, our attorney, raised a crucial point about managing extra supplies for students who may not stay or face delays in registration. Thankfully, the principals shared their commitment to ensuring any surplus supplies reach other schools and local churches, demonstrating the strength of community support. However, we faced a sobering reality: the enrollment numbers for Haitian children are declining due to ongoing deportations. This issue strikes at the heart of many impoverished families, who live in constant fear that their children will be sent back to Haiti. For these families, losing access to education means losing hope for a better life. While we usually avoid politics, it’s important to clarify the reasons behind the current mass deportations. The violent takeover by gangs in Haiti has created a dangerous situation for the Dominican government. They worry about a potential influx of violent immigrants disrupting the peace in their communities. If the Haitian people can establish a stable government, there may be hope for obtaining proper documentation. This would allow the 8 to 10 million Haitians living in the Dominican Republic to secure residency or work visas. At Pencils with Passion, we are committed to educating every child, regardless of immigration status or socio-economic background. Our focus is on the children and teachers, ensuring they have the essential supplies needed for a successful education. At Pencils with Passion, we believe in the power of education to transform lives.Your support can make a difference. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive. Join us in our mission to support every child’s right to learn by donating or volunteering today. https://pencilswithpassion.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_9991.mov Previous Next

Exciting Update: Pencils With Passion Gears Up to Deliver School Supplies to Dominican Republic

Tracey is ready with 12 bags and 600 pounds of school supplies to support two schools and nearly 500 children in the Dominican Republic. The children recently started school, and next week, our dedicated volunteers will deliver backpacks and essential supplies for kindergarten through sixth grade. We’re also gracious and honored to have Mr. Miller, a generous donor, accompanying us on this trip. His contribution helped cover the cost of transporting some of the suitcases, each filled with 50 pounds of supplies. He will also visit the schools to see firsthand how his support is making a difference. A special thank you to Tracey and Lilly for organizing this initiative. Although Lilly, who is now in college, won’t be joining us this time, her hard work has been very instrumental in making this project a reality. We look forward to sharing photos of the children receiving these much-needed supplies and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort. Previous Next
